Dig Deep: Springtime In The Garden
Planting with Nature: Using the wisdom of Nature to nurture a wild and resilient garden.
Every spring, I feel a powerful pull to get my hands in the dirt and start planting. There's something deeply grounding about growing your own food. It's a blend of creativity, curiosity, and connection to the earth. Overall, though, I’ve learned to keep things simple, natural, and a little bit wild.
There’s a reason we have the expression about things growing from the ground up. The ground is where the action is — and it’s the first crucial step to having a fertile garden.
Creating Nutrient-Rich Soil
Instead of relying on store-bought soil mixes, I take a walk to gather what Nature has already prepared. Specifically, use what’s local and native to your environment. When I gather forest debris — leaves, twigs, and decomposing matter — I’m essentially collecting a buffet of nutrients and beneficial microbes that will feed my plants.
Biochar is next. This is an excellent technology! Biochar acts like a sponge, soaking up toxins and improving soil aeration. Compare this to the way activated charcoal detoxifies the body — that is, biochar helps to reset the microbiome of the soil.
And if you live close to the shore, bring some sand back to mix into your soil. This balances the energies, bringing ocean energy to a mountainous environment, for example. It also brings minerals to the soil and drains well.
Pro Tip: Use ocean water to bring minerals in. If you aren’t near a shore, then try Sea-90 Ocean Minerals to fertilize your soil.
I avoid bringing in soil from unknown places since it might carry chemicals or weed seeds. Keeping it local helps my garden thrive without unwanted invaders.
Once you mix all your ingredients together, the soil should feel loose, crumbly, and rich — moist but not muddy. Of course, it doesn't have to be perfect! Experiment, observe, and let Nature guide you.
Creating Your Garden Space
My favorite things to plant are trees. Trees, of course, create different spaces from plants. What are your favorite things to plant? Do you like flowers? Colors? Smells? Fruit? You can map out a plan or do a little chaos gardening.
Some plants do work better together. I like a garden to come together organically. What grows well together? If you observe what works best in Nature, you can follow that intellect in your own garden.
It’s as much about the process as the end result. I’ve found plants tossed along the side of the road and rescued them. Putting those plants in the ground gave them a second life but also gave me a chance to enjoy them and see what they’d do.
Gardening is a process, not a perfect science. It’s about deepening your relationship with Nature, playing in the dirt, and seeing what grows.
Every spring, my garden teaches me something new. And that’s part of the process of gardening — part of the joy. Sure, sometimes things don’t work out how I expect them to, but they always work out the way Nature expects it to! Always, it feels like a beautiful, messy, nourishing adventure.
If you're starting a garden this spring, let go of strict expectations. Just dig in, explore, and see what Nature has in store for you. And Have the Best Spring Ever!
