Herbal Thursday: Licorice Root
Licorice Root: A Top-Tier Demulcent Herb. Explore the soothing plant compounds that make licorice one of Nature’s most trusted remedies.
Today, we are diving deep into the ancient wisdom of Mother Nature to talk about a root so powerful, so sweet, and so soothing that it has been used for thousands of years. We are talking about Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)!
Now, I’m not talking about that red twisted candy you see at the drug store counter. I’m talking about the raw, real, earthy root that builds your vital energy. This herb stands out as one of Nature’s most powerful demulcent herbs. Rich in soothing compounds that coat, calm, and protect irritated tissues, licorice has earned its place in herbal medicine for thousands of years.
Modern research now supports many of these traditional uses, especially for the digestive system, throat, and adrenal health.
A Long History of Soothing the Body
For more than 4,000 years, healers across China, India, Greece, and the Middle East have used licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) to settle irritation in the body. Ancient texts place licorice among the most beloved herbs because it was believed to “harmonize” formulas and reduce inflammation.
Today, scientists know that licorice root contains powerful demulcent polysaccharides, triterpenoid saponins, and the well-studied compound glycyrrhizin, all of which contribute to its soothing, protective effects.
Licorice Root Health Benefits
So, licorice root is a demulcent herb? What is that?
Demulcent simply means that the herb creates a soothing film over a mucous membrane. Imagine a cool, protective coating that calms down irritation in your throat and stomach. That is what licorice root does best!
1. Soothing Your Throat and Lungs
Have you ever had that scratchy, dry feeling in your throat? Licorice root is one of the best natural tools for that. It contains a compound called glycyrrhizin, which is sweet. In fact, it’s about 50 times sweeter than sugar!
But it isn’t just sweet. It’s medicine. Science shows that licorice acts as an antitussive (that means it helps stop coughing) and an expectorant (helps clear out mucus). It coats your throat to stop that tickle and helps you breathe easier.
The Science: Studies have highlighted that licorice root extract has significant antitussive (cough-suppressing) and demulcent properties, largely due to glycyrrhizin, which accelerates tracheal mucus secretion to help expel congestion.
2. Guarding Your Gut
Your digestive tract is the center of your immune system, and licorice root is like a shield for your stomach. If you have ever felt a burning sensation after eating, you know how that pain can drain your energy and prevent you from doing day-to-day activities.
Licorice is famous for helping with “dyspepsia,” which is just the medical word for indigestion. It helps soothe the lining of your stomach and can even fight bacteria that can lead to stomach ulcers, like Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Licorice root is like a cooling blanket for your digestion!
The Science: Research indicates that licorice extracts can be effective against H. pylori and can significantly improve symptoms of functional dyspepsia (chronic indigestion) by protecting the stomach lining.
3. Cooling the Fire of Inflammation
Inflammation is the body’s alarm system, but sometimes that alarm gets stuck “on.” Licorice root helps turn the volume down. It works with your body’s natural systems to reduce redness and swelling.
Think of it as Nature’s way of cooling you down from the inside out. The active compounds in this root stop the production of certain enzymes that cause inflammation, keeping your body happy and your energy flowing!
The Science: Glycyrrhizin and other flavonoids in licorice have been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators like COX-2, acting similarly to natural corticosteroids to reduce inflammation.
How to Use Licorice Root
You can find licorice root as a tea, a tincture, or a powder. My favorite way? Add a pinch of the powder to your herbal tea or superfood smoothie for a sweet kick that heals.
Safety Notes
Licorice root is incredibly helpful, but glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure or lower potassium in some individuals, especially in high doses or long-term use.
Because of this, if you have high blood pressure, you should talk to your doctor or look for “DGL” (deglycyrrhizinated licorice), which has the soothing benefits without the part that affects blood pressure.
People with hypertension, heart, kidney concerns, or those pregnant should consult a practitioner before regular use.
DGL is generally recognized as safer for long-term, daily demulcent support because the glycyrrhizin has been removed.
Final Thoughts
Licorice root isn’t just another soothing herb—it’s a top-tier demulcent with centuries of traditional wisdom and strong scientific support behind it. Whether you’re calming digestion, easing a sore throat, or protecting irritated tissues, licorice root brings both gentle care and deep nourishment.
