Herbal Thursday: Maca
Maca: The Andes Aphrodisiac and the Root of Resilience
Today we’re journeying high into the Peruvian Andes, where the winds blow cold, the rocky soil resists deep roots, and the Sun beats down without relief from tree or shrub. You may wonder what plants could grow near the height of the world. It would have to be resilient, having adapted to extreme conditions and lower oxygen atmosphere. And it is. That plant is Maca, the legendary root that grows where almost nothing else will.
This powerful love herb has fueled warriors, strengthened families, balanced hormones, and awakened human vitality for thousands of years. Let its adaptogenic properties aid you, too.
Where in the World does Maca grow?
When you stand in the high Andes, you understand why Maca became such a treasured superfood. Temperatures swing wildly from warm days to freezing nights. Storms sweep across the mountains without warning. The land is rugged, exposed, and sacred. And right there, in that extreme environment, Maca thrives. It absorbs the power of the elements and drinks in the minerals of ancient soils. Learning to endure, it passes that endurance to us.
Yet Maca is not just food — it’s a force of Nature.
Belonging to the cruciferous family, along with broccoli and radishes, Maca (Lepidium meyenii) behaves more like a powerful tonic root. It grows at altitudes from 9,000 to 14,000 feet, making it the highest-altitude crop on Earth.
Those harsh conditions shape Maca into something extraordinary. Maca stores energy in its root the way a mountain stores strength in stone. And when we consume that root, we receive not just nutrients, we receive adaptability, making Maca one of the top adaptogens in the world.
So what does the science say when we strip away the hype?
It says Maca has real potential in a few key areas, especially adaptogenic properties, sexual well-being and menopause-related quality of life, and stamina. We are in a beautiful place as herbalists: watching research reveal what native peoples have long understood through intuition and observation.

The Health Benefits of Maca
Maca’s power becomes even more remarkable when we look closely at what it actually does inside the body. Every traditional story about Maca as a warrior’s food, a fertility tonic, a mood lifter, and a strength-builder has scientific roots. Each benefit unwraps another layer of this ancient Andean treasure.
1. Maca: Adaptogen Superfood
One of Maca’s greatest gifts is its adaptogenic nature — the ability to help you respond to stress with more balance and resilience. Rather than forcing stimulation, Maca appears to support the body’s “nonspecific resistance,” strengthening how we handle physical, emotional, and environmental pressure.
Adaptogens do not push the nervous system into overdrive. Instead, they help you function on an even keel, providing energy when you feel sluggish or calming you during stressful times. Many people describe feeling steadier, clearer, and more grounded with Maca, as the root gently reminds the endocrine system how to recalibrate.
For example, small studies exploring mood and fatigue hint that maca may help people feel more alive overall without acting like a harsh stimulant or quick-fix energy hack.
2. Maca: Oxygen for Energy & Stamina
People often talk about Maca as a kind of clean fuel. And part of that reputation likely comes from the nourishing, starchy root, which was traditionally used as food. It’s a superfood! In high-altitude regions of Peru, this herb has long been valued for supporting stamina and endurance. In fact, ancient people who settled in the region used the root and leaves because it helps the body use oxygen more efficiently, thus making long journeys possible in thin mountain air.
Modern observations echo this theme of vitality and steady strength. Unlike stimulants that spike and crash, Maca’s energy feels stable and durable — more like a bubbling spring than the flash of fireworks.
It may not be a guaranteed pre-workout or performance enhancer — so much of that depends on the type of root and the person. But many people experience it as calm, sustainable energy that carries them through the day with clarity and resilience.
In fact, athletes in South America have long used Maca to improve endurance on steep mountain trails, and today many endurance athletes use it to support training, stamina, and recovery without stimulants.
3. Maca’s Balancing Act: The Endocrine System
Maca’s relationship with the endocrine system is one of its most profound qualities. Peruvian biologist Dr. Gloria Chacón, whose work is detailed in the Superfoods book, discovered that Maca influences the hypothalamus and pituitary glands — the master glands that regulate the entire hormonal network.
One of the most intriguing parts of this story is mood.
A publication record for a trial in Menopause (the journal of The North American Menopause Society) describes that Maca reduced psychological symptom scores, including of anxiety and depression, along with measures related to sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women.
This research further suggests something deeper than “Maca raises estrogen” or “Maca boosts testosterone.” This resilient plant, on the other hand, may help your body feel more nourished and supported.
Which brings us to another health benefit, one which puts Maca squarely in the camp of best Love Herbs.
4. Maca’s Signature Story: Desire and Drive
Maca’s status as an aphrodisiac is not a myth. It is woven into its biology. For thousands of years, Andean people used maca to increase fertility in both humans and animals.
Yet this herb does not force the body into arousal. Instead, it strengthens the underlying systems that make desire and fertility possible. This is the true heart of a Love Herb: supporting the energy of connection from the inside out.
One of the human trials most often discussed is a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in healthy adult men that reported increased sexual desire with Maca, without a matching rise in testosterone. This last point is important because it hints that Maca may work through pathways that don’t simply crank up hormones like a dial. People can experience libido as brain chemistry, blood flow, stress load, relationship dynamics, and self-image — all woven together. So a plant that supports desire without forcing big hormone shifts fits what many people actually want: more ease and more spark, without feeling “pushed.”
More recently, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in World Journal of Men’s Health tested gelatinized maca in men with symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism (e.g., while their testosterone levels were not low, they weren’t producing adequate sex hormones). The treatment group showed improvements on symptom scales, including the Aging Males’ Symptoms scale (AMS) and the Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Males (ADAM), compared with placebo. And the authors concluded Maca may be an effective and safe option in this context.
Safety Profile and Precautions
Maca’s long history as a food suggests a relatively low toxicity risk for most people when used in reasonable amounts. Still, “food-like” is not the same as “risk-free,” especially when concentrated extracts enter the picture.
Here are the cautions that show up in clinical-style summaries:
Maca belongs to the mustard family and contains glucosinolates. Some references caution that people with thyroid conditions should avoid this herb, especially if iodine intake is low, because glucosinolates in excess can contribute to goiter risk in that situation.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are also a “not enough data” zone. A medically reviewed monograph notes avoidance during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of safety and efficacy data.
If you’re someone who tends to run “wired,” maca can feel too activating, especially at higher doses. That isn’t a failure of the plant. It’s just mismatch. In that case, you lower the dose, change timing (morning instead of evening), or choose a different root ally.
Maca: Root of Longevity
When you put all these benefits together — hormonal harmony, improved oxygenation, strengthened reproductive health, steady energy, resilience to stress, and robust mood — you see why Maca has remained a cornerstone superfood for millennia.
It is a root that rebuilds the foundation of life.
A root that strengthens the body’s deepest reserves.
A root that supports love, vitality, and long-term well-being.
Final Thoughts
Imagine a plant that helps you face the world with greater stamina, greater emotional stability, and greater inner strength. That’s Maca, an herb that acts like a rebuilder, restoring what life has depleted.
It strengthens the root of desire.
It restores vitality where exhaustion once lived.
It helps balance hormones so that love, intimacy, and passion can flourish naturally.
May this root bring you the strength of mountain heights, deep vitality, and the joy of a balanced, resilient body. And may today, as always, be…
The Best Day Ever.
