It’s elemental. And when you understand the elements — salt, water, charcoal, herbs — you unlock the body’s innate genius for repair.
Let’s dive in.
Why So Many People Are Struggling With Their Gut
When I first started hearing about gluten sensitivity decades ago, I wondered: Why now? Why this sudden explosion of digestive distress, fatigue, inflammation, and autoimmune symptoms?
I wrote recently about how gluten alone cannot explain it. Ancient wheat often had equal or higher gluten levels, yet people weren’t reacting the way they do today. Something changed.
And a big part of that “something” is our toxic burden. We get toxins in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Toxins can be mold, parasites, and chemicals — anything that places an unnatural burden on your body’s ability to function optimally.
Let’s take wheat, for example. Modern wheat is now routinely sprayed with glyphosate, not just for weed control, but as a drying agent right before harvest. This saturates the grain with a compound that:
disrupts digestive enzymes
interferes with the microbiome
promotes zonulin release (the very protein that opens the gut barrier)
stresses the intestinal lining
Now add stress, processed foods, sugar, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and environmental toxins… and you get irritation, permeability, and — ultimately — leaky gut.
But what is leaky gut, really?
The Real Cause of Leaky Gut (It’s Not What You Think)
People often assume leaky gut is a structural defect — like “holes” in the intestines — but I want to bring you into a deeper understanding that has emerged from decades of teaching detox and watching thousands of people heal.
At the core of leaky gut is one fundamental issue: irritation caused by dehydration of the intestinal tissues.
“Every case is dehydration… meaning there’s not the right isotonic balance of water and salt.”
Let that sink in.
When the gut loses its hydration — not just water, but the electrolyte balance of water and minerals — the tissue becomes irritated, inflamed, and porous. It loses integrity. It becomes reactive.
And when irritation stays long enough, it becomes what we call inflammation. When inflammation stays long enough, it becomes permeability. And when permeability stays long enough, it becomes a full-blown condition.
The tissue isn’t “broken.” It’s thirsty.
And when we restore hydration, magic starts happening.
Sea Salt + Water: The Foundation of Repair
In our Cleanse with Friends community, I teach a very specific method of hydration:
“You can’t get hydrated on water alone. You can’t get hydrated on salt alone. It must be the balance of both. Once you rehydrate your intestines, everything works like clockwork.”
Sea salt-water hydration recharges the gut like a dried riverbed receiving its first rainfall. The tissue plumps. Blood flow improves. Irritation cools. Peristalsis returns. And the gut lining becomes capable of holding integrity again.
This is the starting point.
There’s another step — one that almost everyone forgets — and it may be the most important of all.
Charcoal: The Forgotten First Step in Healing Leaky Gut
Before we talk about rebuilding the microbiome or probiotics or herbs, we need to talk about neutralizing toxins.
That’s where charcoal comes in.
The most important thing… even in addressing leaky gut… is charcoal. Charcoal is an antiseptic, a neutralizing substance. It takes that long-standing irritation and neutralizes it.
Charcoal is the reset. It binds the offenders — toxins, acids, residues, fermentation byproducts — so the tissue can finally cool down the inflammation and rest.
Charcoal is the foundation.
Once the gut stops being attacked, it can begin to heal.
Now, let’s look at yet another natural tool — one that works like a botanical balm, bringing hydration and soothing directly to the surface where it’s needed most.
Demulcent Herbs: Nature’s Soothing Coat for the Gut
When the gut is irritated, inflamed, or dehydrated, few things are as powerful as demulcent herbs. These include:
These plants all share a magical quality: mucilage. These herbs all contain a compound that creates a gel-like substance that holds water, cools irritation, and protects tissue.
Think of demulcents as Nature’s own internal aloe for the digestive tract.
Here’s what they do:
They Hydrate the Gut Surface: Demulcents pull water into the mucosal lining and hold it there. This directly addresses the dehydration at the root of gut irritation.
They Create a Protective Barrier: The mucilage forms a temporary “second skin” over irritated areas, giving your gut the chance to rest and repair without constant friction, acid, or toxins rubbing against it.
They Allow Charcoal and Salt Water to Work Deeper: Charcoal neutralizes. Salt water rehydrates. Then demulcents keep that hydration in place, preserving the moisture the gut so desperately needs.
With these three working together — charcoal, sea salt, and demulcent herbs — the gut lining finally has the environment it needs to regenerate.
The Healing Sequence: How Everything Works Together
Over the years, I’ve discovered a natural rhythm that aligns perfectly with how the body heals:
Step 1: Charcoal: neutralizes irritation, stops the leak, and creates a clean slate.
Step 2: Sea Salt Water: rehydrates the tissues, restores electrolyte balance, and cools the inflammatory charge.
Step 3: Demulcent Herbs: soothe the surface, moisturize vulnerable tissue, and provide protection.
Step 4: Build the Microbiome (Later… Not First!): Only once the terrain is neutralized and hydrated is it ready for healthy bacteria, humic and fulvic acids, and prebiotics.
Trying to “fix the microbiome” first is like planting seeds in a forest fire. Put out the fire first, then regeneration can begin.
Your Body Knows How to Heal
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that healing is not something we force.
Healing is something we allow.
When you give the gut:
the protection of charcoal
the hydration of salt water
the soothing of demulcent herbs
the removal of modern irritants like glyphosate

…the gut doesn’t just “improve.” It remembers how to seal, how to heal, and how to nourish you.
